What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by airway hyper responsiveness & mucus plugging which causes broncho-constriction. A person suffering from asthma may have wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, cough, high pulse rate, sweating etc.
The attack of asthma occurs intermittently. It mainly happens at late night. It may last from few minutes to few days. If a person does not take proper treatment the inflammation & constriction may persist for a long time.
Who Develop Asthma ?
Mainly asthma has a strong relation with atopy .Generally the persons who suffer from asthma are hyper responsive. The persons who develop asthma, may suffer from Allergic rhinitis, urticaria, dermatitis, eczema, bronchial asthma etc.
There are some triggers which are responsible bronchial constriction. The triggers are mainly allergic & non-allergic.
Allergic :- Pollens, dust, mushroom, animal dander, house dust mites, chemicals used in different types of food, etc.
Non Allergic :- Emotions, change in weather, Exercise, Viral infections, GERD etc.
The treatment of asthma include
Allergen avoidance : This process of asthma treatment is to avoid the allergens of an asthmatic.
Pharmacotherapy : This process of asthma treatment is quiet effective and has less rather no side effects. An asthmatic is usually prescribed two types of inhalers. One inhaler is to provide immediate relief from an acute attack & the other one for maintenance therapy.The inhalation therapy is the only option to provide fast relief from an acute attract. Inhalation therapy provides less medicine. On the other hand, there are no side effects of inhalation therapy. Now a day's inhalation therapy is prescribed to a new born baby & pregnant mother also. This treatment option of asthma management is accepted widely all over the world
Immunotherapy : This process of asthma treatment require a long time. Through immunotherapy treatment some allergens (These are the different allergens to which a person is allergic )are injected subcutaneously. These allergens produce allergic reactions within human body. As the time goes on the human body becomes capable to resist the allergic reactions. So there are no symptoms to allergic reactions after allergen exposure.
Through immunotherapy at first verylow amount of allergens is increased slowly. This increasing of allergen dose is done till there are no side effects. After that the amount of injected allergens is increased to a maintenance dose. This maintenance dose is maintained for a certain period of time.
During immunotherapy you have to follow yourphysicians advice regularly. This treatment option continues for a long time. It may be threeyears or more than that. After continuation for a long time your doctor will stop othertreatment
